When WIFN was revitalised in 2015, a new logo was designed to capture our ethos: the honey bee seemed a natural choice. These little creatures work together and cross-pollinate for the well-being of all … but no queen bee is allowed in this hive!
What better motif for the Women In Finance Network than the energetic and productive Apis mellifera … or more commonly, the honey bee?
Bees have a rich symbolic history, from Ancient Egypt as an icon of wisdom and regeneration, to appearing on Napoleon’s Coat of Arms – in heraldry, the bee symbolises diligence and indefatigable effort. Napoleon’s imperial standard was filled with bees.
In establishing and growing the Women In Finance Network, we aim to create a forum in which women from the financial services industry could network, share, encourage and mentor, with the goal being to advocate for women, to support them in their growth and to attract women to the financial services industry, particularly to the financial planning industry. These collaborative and co-operative characteristics are epitomised by the bustling bee. Together with the image of the hive, bees remind us to work together, to share, to have a common goal and diligently to work towards achieving it together. WIFN’s bee logo stands in opposition to the ‘queen bee’ notion – that of seeking only your own advancement and abandoning other women in that pursuit.
For all of these reasons, we cherish the bee as our symbol. In keeping with its community spirit, our bee brooch (Winifred, to us!) is designed and created by The Reaboka Foundation, exclusively for our Network. The mission of this Foundation is to build capacity in community-based projects by empowering families to improve the care and protection of all children made vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. One of their community projects is crafting beautiful beaded products for sale – not only does this raise funds but it empowers the women who make them. So, when you join WIFN as a member, and receive your own WIFN bee, you are supporting women in transforming their communities.
